We are searching for life on alien planets. Since there is only one kind of life that we know of, we are looking for places which have similar conditions to ours. We have theories that describe the development of our natural life, and we are hoping that that kind of life could develop on these planets too.

But do we have to stick to this biological method, which we know of when we are searching for alien life? Maybe nature or an existing life and intellect can create other types of life.

Life is a structure and a system of rules on a physical substance, a complex system that then has the characteristics of life. Maybe the Earth's way is the only way to develop life naturally, but we cannot say that this is the only possible form of life. Life is a representation of information on a physical substance. Thus, the representation of life on a physical substance is fulfilled by the physical substance being capable of storing the information and doing special processes based on this information. Intelligence could be capable of creating this kind of information representation of different kinds of physical substances.

Thus, to find other existing life instead of searching for the environmental conditions where, according to our knowledge, life can develop, we should look for changes which that life would create in that given environment. Even if the life which we know of could somehow be reproduced, and thus not individual in its principles, we must admit that a highly restrictive condition is necessary from the environment to make our kind of life possible. To only search for life which is similar to ours would strictly limit our chances of finding it.
